Do we Honor the James Bond Mystique, or Should the Franchise Move in a Different Direction?

James Bond, 007 has been a series of action movies that were transformed from the Ian Flemming books.   The first book about the British agent was written in 1953.  In total Flemming wrote twelve novels and two short stories, prior to his death in 1964.  The first book was Casino Royale.  However, that was not the first movie made, that honor went to Dr No.  Dr No was made in 1962, with Sean Connery who many feel is the quintessential James Bond.

Since the franchise has been in the popular culture for sixty years, there has been six different actors that have taken on the role.  After Sean Connery, there was George Lazerby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Bronson and Daniel Craig.    Craig announced that the movie. No Time to Die would be his last time playing James Bond.

The James Bond films are so interesting to the viewers, because of the things one can expect in the movies.  Somehow Bond  has transcended sixty years.  Meaning these things just don’t get old or out of favor.  Bond, always has a martini “shaken, but not stirred.”    The story always takes place in a beautiful or interesting location.  There are also many casino scenes.   There have been 20 beautiful Bond girls throughout  the decades.  For those viewers that are not interested in beautiful girls, then there are always the spectacular cars.  These cars are equipped with special features from the MI6 inventor, genius, Q.  Q has also invented all types of weaponry that only a special agent like Bond should have or handle.

"Shaken not stirred"

So then who can be the next James Bond?   It has been a very profitable series earning $7.04 billion.  There is no doubt that James Bond will have another reincarnation.   There have been many suggestions.  One of the suggestions is that it should be a woman.  This comes from the idea that the actress Lashana Lynch took on Bond’s MI6 agent number 007. I am all for equality, but can’t some things stay the same? WTH   Fortunately, the two producers from EON Productions that produce these films, have set their own parameters as far as the Bond character goes.  They need to be British, they need to be able to play Bond for at least 15 years, and it will be a man.  Yeah

These parameters still leave a lot of choice.  Possibly this new Bond character will shake or stir up a new younger audience.   This may open the door for a James Bond that is not white.  One such actor to be considered is Henry Golding, from the “Crazy Rich Asians.”  He’s charming, attractive, young and has carried a big movie.  Another contender could be Rege- Jean Page of Bridgerton fame.  He has the looks, the sex appeal, his youth ( 34 years old) and could certainly give Bond the 21st century remake that would improve its popularity.   A third choice is Dev Patel. He has the acting chops, good looks, is young (32 years old) and the diversity that might be an asset in this competition.

My question to my readers, who do you think should be the next James Bond?   Are there any of the three I mentioned that you think should get this coveted role?   Is there anyone else you think can take on this role?   This is your chance to be the casting director.  Please fill out your comment and let us know why your choice should be James Bond.
