We came back to Sorrento and I want to tell you why. When picking an ideal place to travel, I have my lists of must. I like non-stop flights, however the nearest airport is Naples. With the cut of airline destinations, you have to connect. We flew in and out of Rome, non- stop. It is only 1 1\2 hours by train, so we preferred to do this instead of a connecting trip. Since we first went to Firenze, we took the rail from there. I love beautiful places on the water, and Sorrento is that. There has to be an easy way to go on day trips, and this is a wonderful location for that.
Sorrento is about an hour’s drive from Naples. I always arrange for a driver to pick us up at the Naples train station. Naples isn’t the safest city, so my advice is to book ahead rather than getting a random car service. The train from here to Rome is only one and a half hours. We would go back to Rome to get a non–stop flight home. A popular tourist spot is Mt. Vesuvius. There is more to see, then a dormant volcano. It is also the home of a national park. You can book your visit from your hotel or tour operators around Sorrento.

You will need a ticket for the ferryboat. You can buy the tickets online before you go. Some ferries are high speed. They cost a bit more, but can give you more time to explore. Popular destinations you can visit by ferryboat are Capri, Positano and Amalfi. It’s a lovely ride that adds to your fun excursion.

There is no need to look for Michelin star eateries here. We have never had a poor meal here. No matter how big or how small the establishment is, you are assured of good food. I like to check out random places and have never been disappointed. Italy being Italy, you are always assured of fresh ingredients that are tasteful.

My readers know I love to shop, and Sorrento is one of my favorites. Linen clothing is a popular choice. The fabric here is not only stylish, but washable. I love the sleekness and since the material does not wrinkle, you always have that sharp, Italian look. I found a lovely children’s store, Harmony Junior. If you’re seeking a gift for your child or grandchild, this is a must. The clothes are adorable and considering the price, well worth it. I face–timed with my grandson and he helped me make choices. Other items to buy for are pretty ceramics and everything limoncello.

This was my fourth visit to Sorrento. I can recommend two hotels. The Grand Sorrento Royal is a lovely resort. It is older, but elegant. There are many intimate nooks you can steal away and read your book. The outside has a pool and covered areas where you can sit out by the water. Take the elevator down and access the water for a swim. The buffet breakfast is top shelf, champagne, salmon, and everything you desire. Of course, you can order anything not out. Lunch on the outdoor terrace is just the special you need. The walk into town is further, but the location warrants the extra exercise. The hotel is popular, so if you want to reserve, do it in advance.

I wrote about our stay at the Ara Maris Hotel. I didn’t plan this trip way in advance, and the Grand Sorrento Royal was unavailable. Sometimes change is good, and in this case, it was. The Ara is the newest lodging offer in Sorrento. It has a modern design, but offers the old world service you would want. It has a beautiful pool area, spa, and meal options including rooftop dining.
