Fairies, Trolls or Gypsies. (read on)
On a beautiful day, I ran some chores. One of my stops was at a suburban grocery store. I checked out and loaded my goods into my trunk. A young woman approached me. She was waving a twenty and one–dollar bill. She said, “the cashier in the store told me you dropped this money.” I opened my wallet, purse and answered, “it’s not mine.” I left the parking lot and put this scene behind me.
By the time I arrived home, I received two potential fraud warnings from my bank. There was a hold put on my checking account and a credit card. The next day, I went to the branch. As I unlocked my car, my phone rang. “Hello, this is the Eastchester Police Department, ‘What’s up?”
Are you missing your debit card? I informed the police officer about the fraud alerts and looked in my wallet. It was missing! A detective explained to me, we stopped a car. When they searched the auto, the officers found my card and others. Has anyone approached you at a supermarket?‘ OMG! They asked me to come to the station and fill out a report.
At the station, I learned who victimized me. It was not a fairy, not a troll, but are Romanian gypsies. Here in the suburbs, Romanian gypsies? Who the hell would look out for this crew?
I have traveled to Italy many times. When I am visiting there, I am aware of gypsies. They are prevalent at the Italian train stations. Do not let anyone help you with your bags. These helpers are gypsies and your luggage will be gone. There was a scene in Book Club 2, the ladies board an Italian rail and arrive at the destination without their things.
I now found out how this crime occurred. Readers, take heed because this could happen to you. When I checked out at the supermarket, one of the three criminals watched me put in my debit card pin. At the moment I looked in my wallet bag, my debit card was taken. The gypsies had both my card and pin. They went to my bank and did some damage.
The Eastchester police arrested the culprits and discharged them with a court date. It is inconceivable that these Romanians are U. S residents, and I wonder why they were not turned over to immigration. Maybe theft is not a highly serious crime, but it caused me a lot of work and ongoing problems.
Every utility and monthly bills that had auto pay had to be placed in a new account and reinstated to my auto pay status. Using my past charges I had seventeen accounts needing to be updated. Then I had direct deposits that had to be rerouted. Every day there is some notice in my email, that my payment failed. Things like my dog’s fresh food, Sirius Radio, and Instacart. Something I learned is that some companies if you miss a payment, they need to be paid before you can set up auto pay.
Dealing with Fraud
Don’t use a debit card to make in person purchases. Use a credit card, which can help you earn points
Use your checking account for auto pay, so if you experience fraud on a debit or credit card, your account will not be affected.
