Sorrento is one of my favorite spots to travel. In the past, we have stayed at an older hotel, which is very nice. There were no rooms available for the week we required. Instead, I picked the Ara Maris, a modern hotel. The hotels have doubled in cost since the pandemic. This was not inexpensive, but comparable to other high–end stays in Sorrento.
History
When we said we, we’re staying at the Ara Maris. The reply would be “the new hotel.” In a city where little is under the age of fifty, they consider the reconstruction of this building a rarity. There is no open space to create such an ambitious project.
In the 1950s, Carlton International was constructed with funds from the Marshall Plan. It was an elegant symbol of Amalfi Coast lodging. Between owner disputes and the pandemic they sold the property in 2022. A vision for a modern hotel was designed and is named the Ara Maris, which in Latin stands for (altar of the sea.)

The location of this modern beauty is perfect. It’s a short walk into the center of Sorrento. This gives you the option of being near the action, yet enjoying the serenity when you return. The site also affords views of the Bay of Naples. There is a pool area, where you can relax or have breakfast or lunch.

Design
The Italian design for the hotel is modern and sleek. Both the architecture and furnishings make the intentions of Ara Maris stand out among its competitors. There is no registration desk, instead you sit comfortably while you get checked in. The lobby has cozy seating nooks, convenient to the appealing bar. At night, you can go to the rooftop restaurant. You can see the sights of Sorrento, dine, drink and be entertained. This special place creates a romantic mood.
The Rooms
Unlike many European hotels, the accommodations are spacious and modern. There are now 49 rooms, in the Carlton there were 72. We had a king-sized bed, large flat screen TV with streaming and an oversized balcony. The bathroom is also roomy.
The Service
The service was special. When you travel, amenities or add–ons get pushed on you. That is not the case here. The hotel features an incredible spa. A booklet of spa treatments is placed in your room. If you choose to peruse and gather further advice, then that’s on you. No pressure to purchase anything. However, if you need information, everyone will advise you.
Thala Spa – comes from the Greek word Thalassa meaning sea.
I have been to many spas. The offerings at Thala were most interesting. For instance, I had an 80 minute, detoxifying massage. By using gestures that micro–circulate and oxygenate your skin, it eliminates toxins to give you relief. The massage leaves you revitalized with radiant skin. I also had an exfoliating massage over my entire body. The first part was working on the exfoliation, then I showered off and got massaged. This did wonders for my crêpe skin. For your use, there is a wet area. This includes a Turkish bath, sauna, hydro pool and a sensory shower. Next to the spa is a facility with an array of exercise equipment
Activities
The activities are crafted around the ambience of Sorrento and the chill vibe of the Ara.. How about a class on making Limoncello? Limoncello not your speed, maybe a Campania wine tasting? Yoga, by the pool? I even got a fifteen–minute free massage outdoors. At night, you can catch live music or a DJ on the rooftop. Once you leave the hotel, there are many restaurants, bars, and shopping to keep you busy.

Conclusion
This is a beautiful vacation, with wonderful service, decor, spa, and location. I plan to write about Sorrento and why you should travel there. Meanwhile, if you want to settle in a place that you feel. pampered, think Ara Maris Hotel. Treat yourself well, WTH.
