Touring Scotland
As an avid watcher of the Outlander series, they inspired me to visit Scotland. To accomplish an excellent overview of the country, I took a seven–day bus tour. The company I chose was Trafalgar. The itinerary seemed interesting, and the price was reasonable. We were guided by Kate, and the heroic driver was Keith
The tour covers a lot. I am writing separate articles for each day. The group gathered in Edinburgh, and we met our fellow travelers at a dinner. Tomorrow we will explore the old town and learn about this beautiful city. We walked in on our own and took a step into history.
The Royal Mile
What is called the Old Town in Edinburgh is architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries. Along the cobblestone streets are shops that appeal to tourists and locals alike. The center is only a mile long but has such an enchanting atmosphere it attracts sizable crowds. There are many pubs and restaurants to choose from. Many schools of higher learning are near, which gives this center a young vibe. With a captive audience, you will find street performers sporting their talents.
Historic Edinburgh
The Royal Mile was named because in medieval times they developed the main street around the imperial residences of Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. It was used as a ceremonial route for kings and queens.
Edinburgh Attractions
Within the town, there are interesting attractions to be seen. There is something to intrigue many visitors. For history buffs, Edinburgh Castle and St. Giles Cathedral should be on your list. If the arts are your passion, then see the Edinburgh Museum. For those who like to meander, browse through the Closes, which are narrow alleyways. A popular Close is the Real Mary King’s. According to legend, the area might be haunted. Since you are in Scotland, a must is the Scotch Whisky Experience. You can’t visit without trying a wee dram. Historic Edinburgh
Edinburgh Castle
At the top of Castle Rock, which provides a panoramic view, is Edinburgh Castle. This symbol of Scottish pride and heritage has served as a fortress since the 2nd century AD. There are many impressive collections and sites to peruse. There are the Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, the Great Hall, St. Margaret’s Chapel, and the National War Museum. Fun fact: if you’re around at 1pm daily except Sundays, Good Friday, and Christmas Day, a cannon is fired.
St. Giles Cathedral
The original architecture goes back to 1124; however, the present–day building reflects more of the medieval and Victorian styles. St. Giles is the patron saint of Edinburgh. Once a Catholic church, it became Presbyterian during the Scottish Reformation. There are impressive features in this cathedral. The Crown Spire is outstanding as well as its beautiful stained glass, intricate woodwork, and ornate decoration.
Torpichen Inn
After the Royal Mile, we rejoined the group for a special dinner. The historic town is within driving distance and houses the Torpichen Inn. It is run by Kenny and his family. We were greeted with a bagpipe player, which set the tone for this authentic Scottish evening. The building itself dates back to the 17th century and reflects the heritage and cultural significance of the region.
Kenny spoke and sang about his Scottish ancestry and made us feel like we were having Sunday dinner with his clan. As we were dining, a three–piece band played Scottish music and a few popular songs.
According to Kenny, he serves the best haggis in Scotland. They make haggis from sheep’s innards, mixed with onions, oatmeal, suet, spices, and stock. Kenny’s version of this national dish contains a wee bit of whisky. Being a picky eater, I was hesitant to try it, but I would rather not insult the chef. I went for a taste and found it was better than I expected. We said our goodbyes and headed back to the bus. Our trusty driver, Keith, navigated the narrow, dark roads and got us back safely. Tomorrow will be an early departure as we continue on to the Highland region. It was a long day, but WTH we had a wonderful time.
