As a New York resident I have taken notice while driving, how aggressive and just outright stupid drivers have become. What are the reasons for this dramatic change in driving style? This is not just a New York phenomenon, bad driving is happening throughout the United States.
Those of us that live in cities are required to be able to parallel park. For some this is a challenging skill. One driver was just sitting in his parked car, listening to music in the Inwood section of Manhattan. According to the driver, somehow the car accelerated in reverse and the car ended up on top of the car behind him.
What are some reasons for this unfocused driving? The reasons which are many can be blamed on the pandemic. The first reason is that daily drivers were only driving infrequently. When they returned to the roads these drivers were out of practice. Other people moved out of the city and into the suburbs, while others moved to states where one needs to drive. All of this has created a lot of new drivers. When they started driving hardly any cars were on the road and now roads are back to being crowded and for the novice driver a hazardous situation.
In Queens, NY a 35 year old woman, pulled out of a supermarket and made a turn too jumped up onto the sidewalk and into a closed car wash. A woman was run over and so was a 10 year old girl, who died. On the back of the car was a sticker new driver.
Then we have the aggressive drivers that are simply angry, or mentally imbalanced. Recently, in Washington DC a car slammed into the Yotel Hotel, sending five people to the hospital. In Albuquerque, New Mexico an incredible feat of driving stupidity occurred. Two cars were speed racing, when a Mustang crashed into the school bus, slamming into it at 100 mph. There were 23 students from George Sanchez Middle School on the bus. Seven ended up in the hospital. When the car hit the bus, the students weren‘t belted in and as the bus tipped over the students went flying. No safety belts on the bus makes the situation even worse. WTH!
Many drivers are unfocused, which admittedly could be any of us. Have you ever been driving and realized you weren‘t paying attention at all? A 73 year old woman from Washington State was stopped at a red light, when the passenger in the car next to her informed the woman that her gas cap was open. No good deed goes unpunished. So since she was stopped at the red light, she went to close the gas cap. All would have been good, when in her haste she forgot to put the SUV in park. The SUV started rolling and the woman tried to get back in the front seat. What really happened was as she grabbed the front door, her vehicle rolled over her. A driver that was behind the runaway SUV, put his car in park to help what he thought would be an assumed badly injured woman. When he got to her, she picked
