If you know history, then you are aware of the Gold Rush which attracted many miners flocking to the American west in the late 1840’s.. This involved a lot of commitment, work and sacrifice. Fast forward to 2026, and the renovation of a building in Belgium. As a construction crew was replacing sewage pipes in a basement of a non profit property they came upon a big find.
Construction Workers
The building is in the town of Dendermonde, Belgium. Part of this crew is an 18 year old Kobe, working on his summer job. When interviewed he said, “at first we didn’t think it was real.” They opened a wall and found bars of gold and golden coins. The estimated value is 10 million dollars. It is easy to imagine that the workers could have remained silent and taken the find.
Who Gets the Gold?
The men called the police to report the incident. They realized the haul would be too large to keep and opted to be honest. There are laws that guide how this treasure will be handled. The legitimate owner of the gold has five years to claim it. If it is found to be from a crime, then the victim would get it back. If neither of these things occur, after five years the value will be split 50/50 between the owner of the building and the construction workers who found it.
